Ranging from his ode to the much-maligned urban pigeon (Winged Rats) to a haunting Holocaust scenario with a repeated chorus gradually diminishing like a decimated people, Peter Streitz's clever poetry will give you pause. Savour it.
Hellfires Shake the Blues Peter Jacob Streitz 9781681600222 Books
P.J. Streitz's poetry is not for the faint of heart. Yet if you make the effort, you will be well rewarded. At times Eliot and Kerouac, his poetry stretches the imagination. The rich and varied cadence and metaphor invite one into a world where language, his language, thoughtful and provoking, opens up vistas into a land where secure boundaries and familiar worlds are smashed. And out of the ruins, comes not a new order but an appreciation for his iconoclastic vision of the old one. It is a vision worth declaiming, and similarly worth experiencing; an exciting, poignant hellish romp. "Hellfires Shake the Blues," as well as his praiseworthy novel, "Past Oz," deserve a prominent perch on any lover of literature's bookshelf.Product details

Hellfires Shake the Blues Peter Jacob Streitz 9781681600222 Books Reviews
Hellfires Shake the Blues is a deeply moving book of poetry. It is filled with many poems that will strike a chord with many readers. I am very sure that anyone will find several of the poems they will enjoy, if not all of them, as I did. I highly recommend this book of poetry. It is a must have for all the poetry lovers out there. If you have never really cared for poetry, give this one a try and I am very sure you will enjoy it as much as I have!
As in his more recent collection, No Words…Just News, Peter Jacob Streitz gives the reader stacks of poems full of pressing emotions, and the poems are appropriately described in the title as hellfires to shake your blues. Streitz’s arrangements quickly fill the pages and the words sometimes burn. Read with care.
Both this book and its successor are available from Crimson Cloak Publishing, and at 174 pages Hellfires Shake the Blues is surely no slim volume. It makes sense that flames appear on the cover, given the burning insights that the poet offers.
Streitz treats on a variety of topics here, including kindness (“It’s the most brutal/Of bombshells/An improvised/explosive), age (“When’d that pockmarked/Bastard appear”), and fashion (“It’s all scoop necks/And cleavage”).
The poems occasionally take up a small amount of space (see “Money”), which sometimes seems for the sake of humor and sometimes seems to be a product of a poet who has said what he needs to say. The poems occur in Streitz’s stream of consciousness, call and respond style.
These poems, as those found in No Words…Just News, take a word or phrase, and then build or elaborate. The poems even seem to escalate in a way. Streitz shows his command of language as he writes, including repetition and calls one of his titles a “non-poem.”
There are flashes of the meditative and philosophic here, as in “Tats” “Beauty behold/For it is me/A flash of nirvana/Spoken.” Elsewhere Streitz shows off his powers of description, as in “Skirts” “With calves/Hooking/Like ladders/To muscled thighs.”
If you are looking for a journey through verses that stirs, engages, and makes use of vivid language, here is another collection of work to add to your list. Incidentally, the paperback collection is beautiful and nicely put together.
