Seeing that Jeannie Brand had published a memoir, I wondered how this might take me back to the music and culture that I enjoyed so much then and still remember happily. After all, Jeannie was Oscar’s daughter, and Oscar was central to the emergence of many, if not most, of the popular musicians that came from the folk music tradition. So she was there, experiencing it as no one else ever could.Did you know Oscar Brand? Yes, the musicologist, playwright, author, host of his own radio show, which ran continuously for 70 years according to his Guinness World Record, host of festivals, singer of folk songs, mentor of folk performers, writer and performer of scores of real vinyl records, from songs of the services (throw a nickel on the grass, save a fighter pilot’s ass) to bawdy songs (On my first trip up the Chippeway River, my first trip to Canadian shores), songs for doctors, for boaters, for lawyers, loving and fanciful songs for cats and dogs, spiritual songs and the rare X album, etc. That Oscar Brand.

She was her own young woman with her own interests and desires when she was called on again and again to care for her younger brothers as the adults partied on. And then there were her attempts at happiness that could not work out because, despite her devoted, caring father and the sheltering folk community, other close-to-home actors, whom she trusted and needed to rely on, left her betrayed and injured.
Jeannie’s story is a page turner, not mere history, but Jeannie’s experience of it. She finds the drama and emotion in the events of her life that others might have overlooked in theirs or that might have been forgotten in the mundane duties of daily life. But, in Jeannie, they were noticed and, in her book, given justice as the series of polished and considered gems that make up her story. The historical context is mid- to late-century, and sweeps from Canada to upstate New York to the City to Washington to Selma to the escape from Romania clutching her beloved infant son.

I am a constant reader but it has been a long time since I could not put a book down to the point of neglecting all else, excluding "bio breaks", meals and cat obligations--oh, and a few hours sleep. Jeannie Brand has written a painfully honest memoir of a young woman growing up in a special time and place and with as special man, folk music icon Ocsar Brand, for a father. Full disclosure, I grew up in the same neighborhood as Jeannie at the same time and I personally recall many of the places and some of the people mentioned. However, the general reader with no connection to 60s and 70s Greenwich Village will undoubtedly be as enthralled with this account as I was. For it is not your typical admiring "child of celebrity" memoir. Jeannie adores her father, who passed away during the writing, for reasons well beyond his professional achievements but she presents him "warts and all" to her readers.Oscar Brand is the co-star in this saga, but it is her story, not his. Most uniquely she does not shirk from addressing painful episodes in her childhood and adult life with an inspiring gift of courage. She talks of the good times, and the bad, telling of her feelings but not being bogged down in psycho-babble. There is drama but there is also a deep and abiding love, of a daughter for her father, but also a sister, wife and mother. Read this book...but don't start the day before an important meeting, you will regret having to put it down.
Full disclosure I accompanied Oscar Brand for over twenty years as he sang his way from NY to LA, Toronto to Texas and points in-between. Oscar's daughter Jeannie has written a terrific book about the choices we all make with families, careers, etc. Her childhood was unique, to say the least, but she writes about it with an adult's insight and understanding, making it a story we can all relate to on some level. Humor, drama and famous people elbow their way into a memoir that's hard to put down.
I purchased this book expecting the usual litany of backstage folk music revival-era anecdotes, some new, most hackneyed. What I got was a deeply moving and personal accounting of a life and a family against the backdrop of the world of Oscar Brand. This was a most unexpectedly engaging read, as vivid a page-turner as any murder mystery. I could not put it down. There is humanity here. There are true and relate-able descriptions of family dynamics which are at once painful and heartening. One does only imagine the volumes which were LEFT OUT of this story, out of love, respect, and concern for others. However, there is enough rich storytelling and HONESTY, that one can't help but fall in love with the writer's shining spirit. You may have come to this book to read about Oscar Brand. You'll stay for the story.
I just finished this book by my friend Jeannie. I highly recommend it, especially for those who had a connection to the folk scene in Greenwich Village in the fifties through the seventies. It's a tribute to her dad Oscar Brand, who always seemed to be at the center of that scene, performing, writing songs and jump-starting the careers of many other artists, some of whom became much more famous than he did. It is also a moving memoir. If you had a parent who was a performer or who had a larger-than-life personality, if you were the product of a messy divorce or had a step-family, you may find the the highs and lows of Jeannie’s story familiar. There is no slogging through this book. The writing is authentic and fresh, and it moves along at a clip. I couldn’t put it down.
